Thornton Creek Hatchery
The Thornton Creek Hatchery is located on the North side of Ucluelet Harbour - 1Okm from the town of Ucluelet near Port Albion. This salmon enhancement project raises and releases hundreds of thousands of salmon into water ways in Barkley and
Clayoquot Sounds each year.
The Thornton Creek Hatchery harvests eggs from returning salmon as they are about to spawn in the creek, or other waterways the hatchery works in. Then they take the eggs back to the hatchery, fertilize and incubate, hatch and raise them, and then release them back into the wild.
Last spring Thornton Creek released over 500, 000 Chinook and around 600, 000 Chum. Coho is raised in holding tanks for a year and around 50,000 are released in April/May. They will continue to release salmon into particular water systems until its number of returning salmon increases to a healthy level and it is able to sustain itself. Then they move on and enhance another system.

The Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby is an annual event that runs all summer long! This year marks the 2nd Annual Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby. The sports fishing community has come together to organize this season-long derby to give visitors and locals the chance to win some serious cash prizes, and to raise funds and awareness for salmon enhancement on the west coast! Net proceeds are donated to the Thornton Creek Hatchery
2011's derby ran from May 1st to September 7th, 2011. The top 15 fish of May, June and July, along with the top 50 fish of the season were automatically entered into the September Fish Off, September 9th, 10th & 11th, 2011. Thousands of dollars were rewarded MONTHLY, with a huge cash prize rewarded at the Fish Off. The Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby gave away over $60,000 total in cash and prizes two years in a row!!
Low cost entry fees and fabulous prizes guarantee plenty of fun out on the water, with the proceeds going to the local Thornton Creek Hatchery, whose motto is "we hatch'em, you catch 'em".
Early-bird annual tickets ($35) are available for the season until March 31st, 2011. The 2012 Fish Off will have two $250,000 Hidden Weight Grand Prizes!
Here's how it works: Each day of the Fish Off, two Fish Off participants will be randomly selected to match a hidden weight selected by Grand Prize Promotions. These hidden weights will be presented to organizers in a sealed envelope for confirmation following the day of fishing.
If there is a match, the winner will be announced at the Closing Ceremonies. Selected participants have the chance to catch and match ... and to win a quarter million dollars!
Draw for 5 Fish Off Spots!
Made the ladder but are not in the top 15? You are eligible for our September Fish Off Draw if your fish is in position 16 to 50 on the ladder at each month's cut off time: midnight May 31st, June 30th or July 31st. Five Fish Off positions (invitation only) will be announced at a draw made at noon, Sunday, August 19th 2012. To enter into the draw participants have until the 15th of the following month to forward their name, ticket number, fish size and date caught.
